First, your comment that good breeders ensure that their pups go to good forever homes seems a little naive. Good breeders cannot ensure their pups go to forever homes, no one can. We can't even absolutely ensure it, in spite of the multiple home screenings, reference checks and the fact that our (my) sole purpose is to find exactly that - good forever homes. Second, if the breeder had a take back policy, then what? Another unwanted dog that is out there contributing to the pet overpopulation problem. The dog has been given back for whatever reason and there are brand new pups waiting in the wings for the next forever home. I might have misunderstood the next statement that "Without breeders, there would never be QUALITY dogs, and ONLY crosses and poor quality dogs". I take great offence to this statement - my dog is not "only" a cross or a poor quality dog. He's a beautiful, healthy, well adjusted, well mannered, intelligent mutt with a great sense of humour. We are incredibly lucky to have found him in a ditch and have him join our family and teach us about the health and vigour of mixes and cross breeds. A breed dog very often comes with health issues; this is well known, ask any vet about breed specific health concerns:
Pointers - hip dysplasia, skin conditions, thyroid conditions
Golden Retreivers - hip dysplasia, von Willebrand's disease, heart problems, cataracts, skin conditions, eyelid/eyelash/retinal abnormalities, epilepsy
Labrador Retrievers - hip dysplasia, cataracts, bloat, eyelid/retinal abnormalities
Irish Setters - hip dysplasia, bloat, congenital heart disease, skin conditions, epilepsy
Cocker Spaniels - cataracts, glaucoma, eyelid/eyelash/retinal abnormalities, skin conditions, hemophilia, ear infections, heart disease, epilepsy
Beagles - heart disease, spinal disc problems, bleeding disorders, epilepsy, skin conditions, glaucoma and cataracts
Boxers - susceptible to tumors, digestive problems, heart disease, corneal ulcers and bloat, with the trademark short face this breed is sensitive to hot stuffy conditions and heat stroke
Poodles - cataracts, glaucoma, eye and ear infections, digestive disorders, skin conditions, heart disease, epilepsy
German Sheppard - hip dysplasia, bloat, gastric disorders, panostereitis, spinal paralysis, pannus, skin conditions
Border Collie - hip dysplasia, CEA (collie eye anomaly), epilepsy, congenital deafness
Great Danes - short lived, hip disorders, bone cancer, bloat, heart disease, tumors
Just to name a few.
What I was saying in my original post was that if a breeder is a good breeder, they have nothing to worry about and would welcome this type of database as it works to seperate them from the bad breeders, which make all breeders look bad. The breeders that I have met, are just as concerend about the bad breeders as anyone else.
