Mares, Foals and Hormone Replacement

Over the past few days the newswires have been announcing that a research project studying the effects of "Hormone Replacement Therapy" (ie. Premarin) has been stopped after 5 years, three years short of its completion date.

16,000 women took part and the research was to ascertain that HRT reduced breast cancer. What they found was that HRT may increase breast cancer instead. The news stories indicate that the risk of heart disease may also increase.

What this means for animal welfare and the thousands of mares and their foals saved is enormous. This news couldn't come at a better time with the increasing number of female baby-boomers entering menopause and looking at treatment options.
