Seems to me Petland is operated differently in every city. Our local Petland in Courtenay has cages in the wall with glass fronts. The pups do stand on wire on the bottom. They now are carrying large breed pups and keeping them in these small enclosures. They also are buying from a local breeder and will not disclose the breeder to the buyer. It's not just the dogs they sell, it's the cats and other animals too. They continue to "pump" more animals into the area while it feels like it's raining cats and dogs who have no place to go. These animals are making the rounds as they go from pup/kitten to adults which purchasers can't/don't want them anymore. I've met some who lack hair, some with kinked tails, some with mange, some who won't stop barking 24/7 and the list goes on. I know because they have either brought the pups into the pet supply store I work at to look for a way to rehome them, or they come in looking for advice to treat mange a natural way. I was involved in trying to rehome the barker. Some pups come by air from Calgary. Sales and caging standards seem to be really low. Many, at seven weeks, are far too young to be taken from their mothers in the first place.
