If I was a rabbit, I would take freedom and a natural life no matter how brief - any day - over being "rescued". And I'd take death over life in an SPCA and being shuffled to another prison cage in a yard.
Too many rescuers keep cats and other small, helpless, creatures in cages or apartments for their whole, pointless lives. These women only understand control of animals, which is best for themselves: but it is freedom that is best for any creature.
The SPCA is doing the only right thing, except perhaps for the well-meaning idea of sterilizing some females. Doing this in a natural population can spell the death of the sterilized animal, and it is like sweeping back the tide and a pointless waste of money.
The SPCA must stop "educating" children on the "right way" to imprison little creatures who are not capable of being companion pets, like rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds, fish, in short, any being that must be kept locked up. The SPCA must start to tell the truth, no matter how uncomprehending a majority of their donators are: that it is cruel to cage animals.
